Challenges

Once the center of clinical excellence and education, the new St. John Paul II Hospital and the USTH Clinical Division experienced debilitating challenges which were exacerbated by the pandemic. The conversion to a dedicated COVID-19 facility and the subsequent struggle to return to full operations inflicted critical damage: patient admissions plummeted, learning opportunities for residents dwindled, and operating revenues fell short of rising costs.

Successes

- Achieving zero-balance billing through USTMAAA’s philanthropic efforts and St. Martin de Porres Indigency Fund ensures continuity of care for patients — regardless of their ability to pay.
- Investments in new patient diagnostic resources such as as ECHO equipment, video-laryngoscopes, EKG machines, a LAP tower, CT scanner, MRI and a portable X-ray, to name a few, improved patient retention, increasing census and continuity of care.
- 100% increase in patient census and patient cases in OB, Surgery, ER, and inpatient units
- Competitive stipends for residents mitigate the need for outsourced hospitalists and improved retention and clinical experience of residents.
- Increase in philanthropic disbursements for patient care and resident stipends from $30,000 to $218,000.

"There were numerous patients who needed surgery but were hesitant to seek consultation due to financial constraints. During our history taking, we would learn that these patients would force themselves to tolerate the pain / disability and hold off the surgery. Thanks to the medical surgical mission, we were able to help them alleviate their respective medical/surgical conditions."
