  • Which non-probate asset is most commonly given to charity?
    The most commonly gifted non-probate asset is an IRA or 401(k). This is because these accounts are always taxed (even for people below the estate tax threshold). Giving these accounts to charity keeps your heirs from having to pay unexpected taxes.
  • What's a "non-probate" asset?
    A non-probate asset is an account or other asset that won’t be governed by the decisions you make in a will. Instead, these accounts commonly have an assigned beneficiary that you choose. Types of non-probate assets include many retirement accounts, life insurance, some bank accounts and some assets (like a house or vehicle) that you jointly own with another person.
  • Does it cost anything to plan my estate?
    Yes, there are many reputable, free, online tools to help you make a will or trust. You can even use them to prepare information before retaining an attorney to finalize your plans.
  • Can my gift be anonymous?
    Yes! Knowing about your intentions in advance helps our team plan for the future and make sure your gift is used as you wish, but you are always welcome to remain anonymous.
  • Is a beneficiary designation different than a will?
    Yes! Even if you have a will in place you still need to designate beneficiaries for your non-probate assets.
  • Is my estate big enough to make a planned gift?
    Yes! Every gift, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to ending the water crisis. Many people choose to leave a percentage of their estate, which scales up or down with the size of your estate.
  • How will USTMAAA Foundation use my gift?
    We’ll use your gift to meet the most critical needs and/or build our endowment. Our team would be happy to connect with you and discuss a meaningful plan for your gift, should you have specific intentions.
  • Can I edit my documents after I'm done?
    Yes, you are always free to revise or update your estate plans.

    No. You can usually make these easily and at no cost to you.

  • How do I make a gift to the endowment?
    When you make your gift, we'll ask you what you want it applied to. Select the endowment.

    From the projects listed above, click on the "Learn more" button to read more information about that project. On that project page, click on the orange "Donate" button. You'll be redirected to our sister site where you can make a secure donation.

    Yes, we welcome all contributions. We'll apply your contribution to the area of greatest need.

  • What's the relationship between the Foundation and the Alumni Association?
    The Foundation and the Alumni Association are sister organizations. They work in parallel. The Alumni Association is the social side while the Foundation is Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds specific projects and establishes a permanent endowment fund.

  • What is the USTMAAA Foundation?
    The USTMAAA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that unites University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Medicine and Surgery graduates in the U.S. and Canada to establish a permanent endowment fund. We're committed to managing this fund in the U.S. using only interest income and investment earnings to support the charitable and educational initiatives of the UST Medical Alumni Association in America (USTMAAA). We fund the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, UST Hospital, and its indigent patients.

    Right now donations to the Foundation are done at the Alumni Association website. We're developing the technology to take donations here on the Foundation site. For now, click here and you'll be linked to our sister Alumni Association website. All donations made on the Alumni Association site are transacted with, by, and through the Foundation.
