Challenges
As St. John Paul II Hospital rebuilds its profitability, USTH Clinical Division still needs operational and financial support to provide comprehensive medical services for indigent patients.
Successes
- Achieving zero-balance billing through USTMAAA’s philanthropic efforts and St. Martin de Porres Indigency Fund ensured continuity of care for patients — regardless of their ability to pay.
- 100% increase in patient census and patient cases in OB, Surgery, ER, and inpatient units
- Equipment donations at Pope John Paul II Hospital for diagnostics and treatment eliminate the need for patients to leave the hospital and get such ancillary diagnostics elsewhere, thus improving their continuity of care.
"I noticed that [patients’] lack of awareness or knowledge regarding their own disease is one of the reasons that these individuals often forego their physical exams and consultation. Knowing this, it is evident that more medical-surgical mission projects should be a necessity in helping others to maintain a healthy lifestyle and increase their quality of life."
- Corrine Reyes, USTFMS Surgical Resident
